Matilda Moves Back Into Multi-million Dollar Renovated Algonquin Hotel!
Just in Time for Memorial Day and Summer Travel, The Algonquin Hotel Re-Opens May 24

NEW YORK, NY (May 23, 2012) – The Algonquin Hotel, located on Manhattan’s Club Row at 44th between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, will re-open its doors to guests this week on Thursday May 24, after being closed for almost six months for its multi-million dollar guts to décor renovation. While the staff are eager to welcome guests back to the legendary property, perhaps its resident feline Matilda is the most excited!

Sitting atop her throne by the front door, Matilda is excited to show off her new digs.  With $15 million invested, the renovations are extensive with no detail overlooked from plumbing to furniture. The renovation to the property’s public spaces and 181 rooms/suite have been significant and guests will notice from the minute they step foot into Manhattans famous living room, the Lobby, home to the famed Round Table and a place where guests and locals alike gather to share a cocktail and snack. All new décor honors the artistic heritage of the hotel, while highlighting a sense of freshness and modern Manhattan.

Once checked in, guests will immediately see in each of the hotel’s 181 rooms, including 25 suites, the residential feel that masterfully combines modern design with classic New York City elegance. Rooms will feature a customized “picture window” headboard, featuring backlit black and white 1920's photograph by Irving Underhill, along with stylish furnishings.  The completely remodeled bathrooms feature luxurious baths in the suites and glass door shower stalls in the rooms, all with Italian floor tiles and back-lit vanity mirrors with L’Occitane product.

To celebrate its re-opening, the Algonquin has updated its popular Matilda Package to include:

  • Accommodations in the newly renovated NYC apartment-style rooms
  • Continental breakfast for two
  • Welcome cocktail  in the hotel Lobby
  • Matilda coloring book
  • Feline focused book entitled Fabulous Felines by Sandy Robins
  • Plush, stuffed Matilda cat and chocolates for the kids to take home
  • CATabulous eye mask that will allow you to have the best cat nap in town!

The package will be available from $329.00 per night not including customary city and state sales taxes.

The Round Table Restaurant, reopening on May 24, and the Blue Bar, due to re-open in early June, will serve up classic favorites like the classic Algonquin Manhattan and Martini along with the Algonquin burger and shrimp cocktail.

With its rich literary past, the opening couldn’t come at a more appropriate time as New York Book and Media Week kicks off in early June. The Algonquin will partner with Penguin Books for a private reception where a host of high profile authors including Rachel Dratch, Junot Diaz, Simon Doonan and Elizabeth Gilbert will be in attendance.

The Algonquin is part of Autograph Collection, a collection of independent hotels offering exceptional experiences within the Marriott International, Inc. portfolio. As part of Autograph Collection, guests are able to earn and redeem Marriott Rewards points for stays at The Algonquin.

Editor’s notes: Interviews with General Manager Gary Budge are available upon request, as are images of the property.
