Special Menu Selections from Collins Design Reprint of Spécialités de la Maison
Featuring Recipes from Robert Sherwood, Katharine Hepburn, Helen Hayes, Charlie Chaplin, and Tallulah Bankhead
New York, NY, April 12, 2010-- This spring, The Algonquin Hotel debuts a novel new menu featuring recipes from the famous French cookbook, Spécialités de la Maison, recently reissued by Collins Design, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Beginning April 19, 2010, The Algonquin Hotel will feature a rotation of recipes each week: a new appetizer, entrée, and dessert selection from Spécialités de la Maison.
First published in 1940, the iconic French cookbook boasts a diverse collection of recipes by Hollywood and Broadway celebrities, renowned socialites, noteworthy writers, royalty and famous couturiers. Originally issued by the American Friends of France, a charity founded by J.P. Morgan’s daughter, Anne, the collection is an enlightening and entertaining illustration of what the wealthy and famous cooked when eating en famille.
This charming facsimile edition features a new foreword by Graydon Carter, editor of Vanity Fair, who notes, “while dining circa 1940 may have been an unspectacular pastime for most Americans, this did not appear to be the case with Spécialités de la Maison’s contributors, a starry cavalcade of the best and brightest from all walks of public life.”
Some menu items include Katharine Hepburn’s Chicken Burgundy Style, Tallulah Bankhead’s Southern Fried Chicken, Pan Cakes from Helen Hayes, Maine Fish Balls by Robert E. Sherwood, Smithfield Ham from Condé Nast, Charlie Chaplin’s Sour Cream Hot Cakes, and other liberally sprinkled offerings from moneyed American names such as DuPont, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Astor.
“Many of the famous ‘chefs’ featured in Specialites de la Maison played an important role in the famed history of The Algonquin Hotel”, notes Gary Budge, General Manager of The Algonquin Hotel. “Offering this iconic collection of recipes at The Algonquin truly is the perfect match of venue and menu.”
The lunch menu is $22 and the dinner menu is $29 per person. For parties of 5 or more, a reprint of Spécialités de la Maison will be given gratis while supplies last. Books will also be available for perusal for guests visiting The Algonquin Hotel.
In January 2010, The Algonquin Hotel, the world’s most famous literary hotel, forged a partnership with Harper Perennial, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, the premier publisher of celebrated authors such as Harper Lee, Barbara Kingsolver, Michael Chabon, Dennis Lehane, Wally Lamb, and Ann Patchett, among others. This unprecedented partnership allows for guests to take advantage of free eBook downloads and custom events created exclusively for The Algonquin Hotel by Harper Perennial.
